Soloing Patch 6.2.2 rares as a Feral Druid

With Patch 6.2.2 comes some new rares that drop some battle pets and toys, but they are only accessible by flying. Meaning you will need to have earned the Draenor Pathfinder achievement. They are found in two locations, Nagrand and Tanaan Jungle. These rares are soloable as a Feral Druid, but depending on gear, they may take a few attempts.

These rares have a short respawn time, but you can’t farm them as the loot lockout is daily. There is a macro script for each one to tell the status of your lock out. You can copy and paste it from here into your chat or you can make it into a macro.  It’s a good idea to flask up, eat some well fed and use your Hyper Augmentation runes and if you have any to spare, pre-potting will speed up the process. So let’s start in Nagrand.

The macro script can be made in to a macro or copied into the text box.

If it returns ‘true’ then you have received your loot for the day. If it returns ‘false’ then you should head out.

Name: Guk
Location: Nagrand (23.78, 38.61)
HP: 3.1 million
Difficulty: 4/5
Macro: /run print(IsQuestFlaggedCompleted(40074))
Drops: Empyreal Manafiend battle pet
Strategy: Both this guy and Rukdug are inside buildings. I land on the roof to buff up and cast a HT to trigger Bloodtalons. I then stealth and drop down. When you do drop down, be careful you don’t pull the mobs at the entrance. You will take some fall damage, but it wont break stealth. I found that the proc from the legendary ring would pull them if I wasn’t towards the back of the room.

This mob is a mage caster with two attacks: Arcane Blast and Arcane Missiles. Both of these spells can be interrupted and he can be stunned. Use Incarnation at the start and you can time your Rake’s to interrupt casts (because Rake stuns while Incarnation is active). Use Skull Bash on cool down and throw in a Might Bash early, you might get a second one. Keep Rejuv rolling and use SI as necessary. If you get really stuck try using Maim.

Location of Guk

Name: Rukdug
Location: Nagrand (25.94,34.72)
HP: 3.7 million
Difficulty: 3/5
Macro: /run print(IsQuestFlaggedCompleted(40075))
Drops: Energized Manafiend battle pet
Strategy: This ogre is also a mage with two abilities; Scorch and Frostfire Bolt. As with Guk, interrupt as many casts as you can and use defensive’s as necessary. I’ve found this guy to be easier / I take less damage than Guk.

Name: Pugg
Location: Nagrand (28.15,29.62)
HP: 4.2 million
Difficulty: 3/5
Macro: /run print(IsQuestFlaggedCompleted(40073))
Drops: Empowered Manafied battle pet
Strategy: This ogre is melee and can hit pretty hard because he has an enrage ability. This enrage can be dispelled, but it does take you out of Cat Form. You can get around this problem by taking he Claws of Shivallah talent. I’ve found sometimes that the mob uses the ability almost straight away after it has been dispelled. Be careful, use your defensive’s and if you dispel, watch your mana.

Pugg enrage

This is what Pugg’s enrage spell icon looks like, which can be dispelled by Soothe.

Name: Fel Overseer Mudlump
Location: Tanaan Jungle (40.95,56.31)
HP: 4.2 million
Difficulty: 2/5
Macro: /run print(IsQuestFlaggedCompleted(40105))
Drops: Crashin’ Thrashin’ Roller Controller toy
Strategy: All of the rares in Tanaan Jungle should be fairly easy because you have access to the Artillery Strike garrison ability which nukes everything it hits with the three charges. Artillery Strikes aside, this rare is actually quite easy, what you have to deal with are the mobs around them. The rare is flanked by 3 non-elite mobs, 1 on either side and 1 in front. It is possible and I recommend pulling each one on it’s own and disposing of it before engaging the rare.

Defeating the rare is easy once the surrounding mobs are gone. The only thing to note is that the rare does do a small knock-back, which is annoying only because it knocks you out of melee range and you need move back in. The rare is difficult to position because if you move out of its melee range too quickly it will then spam cast it’s Bootarang ability.

You can pull the mobs one at a time without aggr0-ing the rare.

Name: Drakum
Location: Tanaan Jungle (83.42,43.48)
HP: 3.7million
Difficulty: 2/5
Macro: /run print(IsQuestFlaggedCompleted(40107))
Drops: Spiked-Toed Bootarang toy
Strategy: This rare is essentially what a Survival Hunter will be in the next expansion legion. Melee but uses a spear and has some ranged attacks. Like Fel Overseer Mudlump, the rare has a small knock back, which luckily can be countered by backing up against the pillars in the room. Don’t get to comfortable though, because you will need to move out of the Rain of Spears attack. They appear as puddles that look like quick sand and you have about a second to avoid them. They don’t do much damage but will wear you down over time.

Use the pillar to stop you getting knocked back.

Name: Gondar
Location: Tanaan Jungle (80.37,56.83)
HP: 3.1 million
Difficulty: 1/5
Macro: /run print(IsQuestFlaggedCompleted(40106))
Drops: Thrashin’ Crashin’ Cannon Controller toy
Strategy: This rare is probably the easier one of them all. Having the lowest HP helps too. No really noticeable abilities to worry about except that his melee attacks come fast and furious. Keep Rejuv rolling and HT / stun as necessary to stay alive. There are some adds in the room with the rare, but they only have about 108k HP and can be AOE down, or smashed with the Artillery Strike garrison ability in seconds.

Gondar mobs

The mobs surrounding Gondar can be easily AOE’d down or taken out with an Artillery Bombing.

Name: Smashum Grabb
Location: Tanaan Jungle (88.12,55.79)
HP: 5.2 million
Difficulty: 5/5
Macro: /run print(IsQuestFlaggedCompleted(40104))
Drops: Thrashin’ Crashin’ Motor Controller toy
Strategy: I’ve saved the hardest for last. This guy hits like a Mack truck, has the highest HP, leaps into the air and smashes the ground, enrages and is surrounded by mobs. It doesn’t paint a pretty picture. Bring your potions and make sure you have all three stacks of your Artillery Strike as any extra damage will be helpful.

Now you don’t actually need to kill the mobs, just fly over them so you are behind the rare with your back against the wall of the stone structure. You are able to land and buff up without aggroing the rare. When you are ready to engage, make sure you stay close to the wall to avoid pulling the other mobs.

When the rare jumps into the air, that is the best time to use your Artillery Strike. Place the reticule where the rare will land then run back in and engage. When the rare enrages, it grows in size, so is noticeable. You can dispel it the same as Pugg in Nagrand or you can just power through it. Though if the rare is enraged when it leaps into the air, take the opportunity to Soothe. Keep Rejuv rolling, run out and you will hopefully add another toy to your collection, if not, you will have some more Apexis Crystals and Garrison Resources.

Smash Grab

Stay towards the back of the citadel to avoid pulling extra mobs.

And that’s that. Keep at it every day and eventually you will have yourself some new pets and toys. One thing that helps you get around quickly, especially to Nagrand for Alliance players, is having a Mage Tower in your garrison. The portal in the Mage Tower takes you straight to Highmaul where the rares are. Might be worth investigating.

If you have any hits, tips or tricks for these rares you can leave a comment on the post, send me an email at, send me a tweet @Elamari_ or leave a comment on the File Under Feral Facebook page
